Alkylation of pyrimidine derivatives with ethylene chlorohydrin

Alkylation of 6-methyluracil, 5-fluorouracil, uracil-5-ammonium sulfate, 5-hydroxyuracil, 5-hydroxy-6-methyluracil, 3,6-dimethyl-5-hydroxyuracil, and 1,3,6-trimethyl-5-hydroxyuracil with ethylene chlorohydrin in water-alcohol medium in the presence of KOH was investigated.

Quantification of ethylene chlorohydrin and ethylene glycol as potential reaction products in gas-sterilized medical-grade plastics

A gas chromatographic procedure is described for the quantitative determinations of ethylene chlorohydrin and ethylene glycol in disposable medical-grade plastics. Both components are isolated by solvent extraction. The lower limit of detection is 1 p.p.m. of ethylene chlorohydrin and 2 p.p.m. of ethylene glycol. Propylene glycol is used as an internal standard. Ethylene oxide residues have to be removed prior to the assay.

Studies of ethylene chlorohydrin formation in a bubble column reactor

An experimental study of the reactions of ethylene, chlorine, and water in a bubble column reactor, on a laboratory scale, has been carried out. The effect of gas flow rates on the yield of the products in an unbaffled reactor is reported. Baffles were introduced into the column to reduce axial mixing. A significant improvement in the conversion and yield of ethylene to ethylene chlorohydrin was observed.
